Monitoring Environmental Quality at the Landscape Scale Using landscape indicators to assess biotic diversity, watershed integrity, and landscape stability

چکیده
ver the past century, technological advances have greatly improved the standard of living in the United States. But these same advances have caused sweeping environmental changes, often unforeseen and potentially irreparable. Ethical stewardship of the environment requires that society monitor and assess environmental changes at the national scale with a view toward the conservation and wise management of our natural resources. Some of the most important environmental changes occur a t the spatial scale of landscapes. Obvious examples include clearcutting for lumber, urbanization, the loss of wetlands, and the conversion of forest and prairies into crop and grazing systems. Decisions about how to change land cover may be made by individual landowners, but their im-

Water Quality Restoration Using Landscape Metrics Analysis: A Case Study in the Golestan Province of Iran
Abstract The results of an integrated study aimed at restoring water quality in a large watershed including seven catchments in north east Iran are presented in this paper. This case study demonstrates how landscape metrics reflect direct or surrogate causes of the land use practices that are the determinants of water quality parameters. Water quality factors included EC, pH, Cl-1, HCO3-1, SO4-...

The sensitivity of landscape metrics to the scale effect is one of the most challenging issues in landscape ecology and quantification of land use spatial patterns. In this study, fractal dimension was employed to assess the effect of scale on the sensitivity of landscape metric in the north of Iran (around Sari) as the case study. Land use/ cover maps were derived from Landsat-8 (OLI sensor) i...
متن کاملSpatial–Temporal Monitoring of Ecotonal Belt Using Landscape Ecological Indices in the Central Elburz Region: Remote Sensing and GIS Analysis
Iran has mountainous landscapes and half of its surface is occupied by highlands. Moreover, Iran is an arid country and deserts are located at lower altitudes. Most metropolitan areas are positioned in mid-altitudes between mountain and desert. Cities grow upwardly toward the highlands under pressures of urbanization and desertification. Foothill ecotones are a zone between upland mountains and...
متن کاملExploring Non-Linear Relationships between Landscape and Aquatic Ecological Condition in Southern Wisconsin: A GWR and ANN Approach
Recent studies have implied the importance of incorporating configuration metrics into landscape-aquatic ecological integrity research; however few have addressed the needs of spatial data while exploring nonlinear relationships. This study investigates spatial dependence of a measure of aquatic ecological condition at two basin scales, and the spatial and non-linear role of landscape in explai...
متن کاملAssessment and Comparison of Landscape Connectivity in KoozehTopraghi Watershed, Ardabil Province
Following the unbalanced development and overexploitation of the country's watersheds, land fragmentation has become a major concern for the conservation of ecosystem services and land health. For this purpose, the present study was planned to evaluate and compare the landscape connectivity indices of KoozehTopraghi Watershed as one of the ecologically susceptible watersheds located in Ardabil ...
